Teacher Tips: How to Enjoy February

Tip #1: PLAN A VALENTINE’S DAY PARTY

I love celebrating Valentine’s Day with my students, it takes me right back to being a kid too! Valentine’s Day in my classroom always looks like students sharing Valentine's cards that they made for one another, sharing delicious treats, and doing Valentine’s themed activities like a Valentine’s iSPY my students love.

Tip #2: FIND ONE THEMED THING YOU LOOK FORWARD TO

I don’t know about you, but I loveee doing cute themed things, like a Valentine’s who is cupid mystery to solve or some heart-themed coloring activity. I genuinely look forward to the teaching days when I am still doing something academic, but FUN!!

This year I have decided that the one themed activity I will be partaking in with my class will be an escape the classroom SUPER BOWL edition. So many of my students love football and chat nonstop about it so I am super excited to see them conquer this academic, but really fun activity. Maybe you want to play too? Snag yourself one here

Tip #3 CONTINUE TO BUILD CLASSROOM COMMUNITY

January always feels like it is 645 days long so by the time you make it to February tensions can be high. I know that relationship building and classroom community are pushed at the beginning of the school year, but I also think any time the tension is high is a great time to buckle down on who you are as a class.

So how do I do this? MORNING MEETING! I am consistent with my morning meeting every day making it something that my students not only learn from but look forward to doing daily. It is a great opportunity for students to learn new SEL skills and get to know each other even better. I also think it is the perfect low-stakes way to show your students who you are as a teacher and build those connections

Tip #4: MAKE YOUR READ-ALOUDS THEMED

I think that students are never too old to sit on the carpet and listen to a read-aloud. This is something that I genuinely love to do as a teacher and I know my students love it too. So why not make the books you read to your class related to this month's theme!! Here are my recs:

Valentines day

Super Bowl

Black History Month

Tip #5: CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH

I LOVEEE celebrating Black History Month with my students, not only do my students get to learn about amazing people from history, but we get to have incredible discussions about the people and topics we have discussed.
