What is the RACE Writing Strategy?

The RACE writing strategy is a structured approach to answering text-based questions. It helps students organize their responses in a clear, logical way by following these four steps:

  • R – Restate the question in their own words.

  • A – Answer the question completely.

  • C – Cite text evidence to support their answer.

  • E – Explain how their evidence supports their answer.

This strategy is widely used to strengthen students’ writing skills and comprehension. However, some students may struggle with applying it consistently, especially when moving from basic recall to deeper analysis. That’s where RACE Scoot comes in!

What is RACE Scoot?

RACE Scoot is a collaborative, movement-based writing activity where students rotate between different task cards, answering RACE-style questions at progressively challenging levels. Rather than completing responses at their desks, students engage with different texts, interact with their peers, and deepen their comprehension through movement and discussion.

How It Works:

  1. Set up task cards around the room, each with a text passage and a RACE-style question.

  2. Students rotate or “scoot” from one card to the next, answering questions as they go.

  3. The activity is structured into three levels of increasing difficulty:

    • Level 1: Basic “right there” questions (answers are explicitly in the text).

    • Level 2: “Think and search” questions (requiring inferences).

    • Level 3: Analytical questions (requiring critical thinking beyond the text).

  4. Students complete responses at each station, following the RACE method.

  5. The teacher observes student progress, identifying strengths and areas needing support.

Breaking Down the Three Levels of RACE Scoot

The beauty of this activity is how it scaffolds learning, allowing students to build confidence at each level before moving to more complex thinking.

Level 1: Right-There Questions

Students start with straightforward comprehension questions where the answer is explicitly stated in the text. Example: Explain why Molly and Lily did not go to the fair. Students locate the exact sentence in the text, restate the question, and cite the direct evidence in their response.

Level 2: Think-and-Search Questions

These questions require students to infer meaning by combining multiple pieces of information from the text. Example: Explain why the towns were lawless with so much crime. Students must think critically about what “lawless” means and how it connects to the events described in the text. They still cite evidence but must also explain their reasoning.

Level 3: Analytical Questions

At this level, students analyze and evaluate based on their own thoughts and background knowledge. Example: Why do you think the Spanish treated the Native Americans like they did? The answer is not directly in the text. Students must apply prior knowledge, infer motives, and support their claim with textual evidence.

  • Set a time limit per station (3–5 minutes).

  • Guide students as needed, prompting them to justify their responses.
